Dougall Media, Thunder Bay’s only locally owned broadcast/multimedia company, has an exciting opportunity in our Engineering Department, as a Junior Broadcast Technician in Training.

The selected candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of Dougall Media’s broadcasting facilities and the delivery of high-quality audio and video content to audiences around Northwestern Ontario. Combining technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a strong attention to detail to support the complex and dynamic field of broadcast engineering.

Responsibilities include:

  • Hardware-level troubleshooting and repair of broadcast equipment and infrastructure
  • RF installation and maintenance for television and FM radio transmission systems
  • Installation and maintenance of broadcast television and radio infrastructure
  • Installation and provisioning of broadcast IT networking infrastructure
  • File maintenance for broadcast television and radio playout systems
  • Structured cabling installation, testing, labeling and databasing
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements for this position:

  • Technical Knowledge: A strong understanding of broadcast systems, including cameras, microphones, video switchers, audio mixers, routers, servers, encoders, decoders, transmitters, and receivers.
  • Signal Flow Understanding: Ability to comprehend signal flow within a broadcast facility, from acquisition through production to transmission.
  • Electrical Engineering: Knowledge of electrical principles and circuits, including power distribution, grounding, and protection systems. Post-secondary diploma/certificate preferred.
  • Digital Signal Processing (DSP): Understanding of digital audio and video processing techniques, including compression, encoding, and decoding.
  • Computer Networking: Familiarity with networking concepts such as TCP/IP, UDP, VLANs, routing, and switching, as well as experience with network equipment configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Troubleshooting Skills: Ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues quickly and efficiently, both in equipment and signal flow.
  • Maintenance and Repair: Proficiency in maintaining, repairing, and calibrating broadcast equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Communication Skills: Effective communication is crucial for collaborating with other team members, providing technical support, and conveying complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Teamwork: Broadcast engineering often involves working as part of a team, collaborating with producers, directors, technicians, and other professionals to deliver high-quality broadcast content.
  • Class G Driver’s license.
