Job Summary:

The Approaches to Community Wellbeing is a regional resource to 31 First Nations Communities. The Approaches to Community Wellbeing provides expertise, support, services, and programming in public health to the region. The program also supports communities in the development, implementation, and monitoring of their own Approaches to Community Wellbeing. The Raising our Children section of the model includes Family Health, Youth Development, and Building Healthy Relationships

The Youth Facilitator will be a part of the Youth Development section of Raising our Children, and will work to engage youth, develop youth programming, and build community capacity.

The Youth Facilitator is directly accountable to the Raising our Children Manager.

Qualifications:
• Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
• Diploma in social work or health related field, or a combination of education and work experience suitable to the employer
• 2 years work experience in public health and/or issues affecting youth
• Experience in program planning, implementation, and evaluation
• Experience working with youth, and especially First Nations youth
• Must possess excellent communication skills, i.e., Listening, oral, and written English skills, public speaking, making presentations
• Must have strong interpersonal skills
• Must have excellent keyboarding skills, able to perform word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, and use of other office equipment
• Must be willing to travel
• Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license is required along with regular access to a vehicle
• Ability to speak fluently in one of the Sioux Lookout Zone First Nations dialects is an asset
• CPR and First Aid/Wilderness First Aid an asset
• Land based learning such as archery, canoeing, and/or cultural activities such as beading, drum making, ribbon skirt/shirt making experience or training an asset
• Experience and training in cultural competency with First Nations
• Experience with social media
• Valid Ontario G drivers licence
• Ability to perform the duties of the role on a regular basis

Roles and Responsibilities:
1. Establishes and maintains a close working relationship with community health leadership and health and youth program staff to build capacity, promote awareness, and develop self-determination in programming and services.
2. Works closely with regional high schools to support community wellbeing initiatives amongst youth.
3. Develops and supports a social media strategy, health promotion activities, and resources to engage youth.
4. Supports communities in establishing Youth Councils, developing resources, best practices, and templates to follow.
5. Supports and builds capacity of community-based workers through:
o Acting as a mentor;
o Developing and providing resources on the promotion of public health for youth;
o Providing training;
o Conducting workshops;
o Creating a network of youth workers.
6. Builds capacity of youth around priority health issues.
7. Supports funding for youth development programming through advocacy and writing funding/grant proposals.
8. Conducts health promotion initiatives through community visits, school visits, videoconferences, webinars, radio shows, social media, etc.
9. Identifies and develops potential partnerships for regional and community-based youth programming.
10. Develops and shares best practices for youth community wellbeing programming.
11. Promotes SLFNHA’s Approaches to Community Wellbeing.
12. Actively participates on committees and other working groups as a representative for SLFNHA.
13. Advocates for youth to enhance health equity.
14. Performs other duties for SLFNHA as directed.
