Occupational Health Nurse (Mine Site)

The Occupational Health Nurse coordinates and delivers occupational health services to all employees at the Musselwhite (ORLA)  Mine Site.

Responsibilities include:
– Health education and promotion
– Treatment and prevention of occupational illnesses/injuries
– Workplace surveillance and screening (e.g., lead level monitoring, etc) including Audiometry and Spirometry
– Emergency care and on-call services

A working knowledge of WSIB, OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act), and the Labour Code is essential for developing evidence-based client care plans.

Required Registrations & Certifications
Registrations:
– College of Nurses of Ontario
– RNAO or Occupational Nurses Association

Certifications:
– IV Therapy
– ACLS
– BCLS
– TNCC / ATLS / ITLS
– First Aid
– AED Certification
– Audiometry
– Spirometry

Nursing Duties:
Requires strong judgment, knowledge, and experience in:
– Health education, promotion, and prevention
– Treatment of illness and injury
– Rehabilitative services
– Working knowledge of OHSA

Key Responsibilities:

Assessment

  • Evaluate clients’ health considering biological, psychological, social, spiritual, economic, and cultural factors
  • Assess work environment impact

Analysis

  • Use statistics and assessments to identify health issues
  • Determine client priorities and health needs
  • Perform physical demand assessments

Care Planning

  • Define effective interventions and evaluation indicators

Implementation

  • Provide health services, education, and acute/chronic care
  • Manage disability and modified work plans
  • Prevent and control infectious diseases

Evaluation

  • Track health indicators and revise plans as needed

Documentation

  • Maintain records using SOAP charting and WSIB forms

  • Administer medical questionnaires
  • Interpret lab results with referrals
  • Maintain confidential medical records
  • Run monitoring clinics (e.g., pulmonary function tests)
  • Administer immunizations
  • Perform venipuncture
  • Conduct wellness clinics
  • Monitor chronic illnesses (e.g., diabetes, hypertension)
  • Initiate IV therapy
  • Respond to emergencies
  • Maintain on-call availability
  • Inspect first aid kits
  • Conduct workplace assessments
  • Manage occupational injuries and illnesses
  • Liaise with physicians and external agencies
  • Resolve crises
  • Maintain cleanliness and communication tools
  • Annual Flynn resuscitation & cyanide poisoning review
