Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority is a regional resource to 33 First Nations communities. Within the organization, there are multiple departments that have nursing positions (Approaches to Community Wellbeing, Developmental Services, Nodin Mental Health Services, Physician Services, Primary Care Team). The Nursing Practice Specialist will support the organization by providing clinical support and guidance to nursing roles and by collaborating with all departments that staff nurses.
The Nursing Practice Specialist is directly accountable to the Vice President Community Health or designate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Person of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (PHRC, Part II, Special Employment).
• Registered in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Minimum Bachelor of Nursing.
• Must hold nursing membership (RNAO) and Professional Liability Protection (PLP)
• Minimum 5 years clinical experience.
• Ability to perform the requirements of the position on a regular basis.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• In collaboration with departmental Managers/Directors:
o Lead the development and maintenance of scope of practice for current nursing positions across SLFNHA.
o Assist leaders and nursing staff to help ensure they are practicing within best practices guidelines.
o Assist leaders, designated Chief Nursing Officer, and Human Resources with clinical practice concerns and College of Nurses of Ontario reporting.
o Assist in identifying any nursing service area gaps and work with Managers/ Directors to find funding to support those roles.
o Review job descriptions and community service delivery memorandums of understanding to better support nursing roles.
o Review current department audit tools and offer guidance for departments to conduct random charting audits on nursing charts. i.e., review chart notes, consent forms, treatments, and follow-up plans, etc..
o Inspire new levels of creativity and innovation within the organization to positively impact client/service outcomes.
• Support the Quality Assurance Program and all departments to create, review, and establish guideline standards, policies, and procedures as they relate to nursing.
• Identify and monitor nursing-sensitive quality and safety indicators, and work with Managers/Directors to oversee and report risk/strategies.
• Support the development and implementation of Medical Directives.
• Oversee the development and implementation of a core competency training for nursing staff. i.e., research and set up appropriate training required for different nursing positions.
o Assist with nursing training with the emphasis on accessibility and opportunity for cultural (safety, competence, sensitivity) training and ways to avoid systemic racism in healthcare delivery
• Establish regular communications and meetings with all nurses within SLFNHA.
• Develop generalized nursing orientation for SLFNHA.
• Provide clinical education, mentorship, and guidance to all SLFNHA nurses and department Managers/Directors.
• Champion inter-professional collaboration with outside organizations who provide nursing in communities served by SLFNHA (i.e., Tribal Councils, Indigenous Services Canada, communities).
• Some travel into remote First Nations communities may be required.
• Other duties as assigned.
