Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse delivers essential nursing services and education to the community members of Couchiching First Nation. Reporting to the Health Manager, the Registered Nurse will provide clinical supervision and support to the nursing staff. The Registered Nurse will deliver community health programs, support prenatal and maternal health, manage immunizations, and collaborate with local physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal care for the community.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Deliver community health services in group or individual settings such as the community health facility, the community hall, home visits and other designated community sites.
  • Provide clinical care for health programs including prenatal health, maternal and newborn health, immunization, chronic disease management, and general community health.
  • Plan and deliver Community Health Program that considers the physical, social, spiritual, mental, and environmental factors affecting individuals, families, and the community.
  • Provide clinical supervision and support to nursing staff and personal support workers.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with community members, healthcare providers, and First Nation leaders.
  • Communicate and coordinate with other healthcare professionals or agencies involved in the care of community members.
  • Actively participate in community-based health committees, district service unit meetings, and professional events such as conferences and seminars.
  • Provide ongoing education and training to the health team and community members.
  • Maintain accurate health records and submit regular reports on community health metrics.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) preferred, minimum of nursing diploma from a Canadian or accredited institution with work experience accepted.
  • Registered member in good standing with the CNO with general class registration.
  • 2 years experience in advanced nursing assessment skills with an emphasis on immunization, communicable disease, prenatal and community health care.
  • 2 years experience working in a First Nation community or equivalent organization.
  • Immunization Certification, or willingness to complete training and certification process.
  • Understanding of First Nations health concerns, with the ability to apply this knowledge in developing and implementing programs that address community needs.
  • Knowledge of the First Nation, culture, traditions and health beliefs is essential.
  • Strong clinical and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the principles and theories relating to community/public health.
  • Knowledge of Federal and Provincial government agencies, programs, policies and procedures affecting the health services of the community.
  • Ability to work with various software packages (Microsoft Office, Internet and First Nation and Inuit Health Information system)
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, analytical and evaluation skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have, or be willing to get up to date immunizations at the time of hire
  • Ability to provide an acceptable Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Certification in any of the following is an asset: Advanced Wound Care, Certified Diabetes Educator, Advanced and Diabetic Footcare, Certified in Asthma and COPD Education, Certified Smoking Cessation, Certified Health Case Management, Chronic Disease Educator, Certified in Anticoagulation Therapy Management, Breastfeeding and Lactation Consultant, and FNHIB Nurse Authorization to order medical supplies
