NNEC is a non-profit educational organization. Under the direction of the Sioux Lookout District Chiefs, NNEC delivers secondary and post-secondary education programs and services for First Nations people.  NNEC operates Pelican Falls First Nations High School, Pelican Falls Centre, Pelican Falls Wellness Centre, Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School, Wahsa Distance Education Centre and has offices in Lac Seul (head office), Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay.  NNEC welcomes applications for the following positions:

PFWC Youth Worker(s)

Pelican Falls Wellness Centre (PFWC) and Pelican Falls First Nations High School (PFFNHS) in Sioux Lookout require a full-time Youth Worker to support students attending PFFNHS. The Youth Worker will interact closely with students to identify mental and/or emotional concerns that students face and work alongside them through those challenges.  This position will work a modified schedule from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.,  4 shifts on and 4 shifts off during the school year. The salary is prorated through the year (26 pay-periods) and the days of work will follow the school calendar.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       When required will assess using the Hack Intoxication Index, provide regular and frequent monitoring and charting.  Provide support as necessary to the students and maintain close communication with on-site supervisor.

2.       In coordination with the Wellness Team, will provide immediate crisis support to Pelican Falls Centre Staff.

3.       The Youth Worker will ensure the ordered care plans are followed and will provide support to students in their after-care plans.

4.       Youth Workers will be involved in various aspects of services (supportive counselling, nutrition), documentation; calling for health services if required; attending service meetings as required; light housekeeping as required.

5.       Maintain case notes, tracking of any referrals and specialized services, after-care services, and program reporting requirements.

6.       Work with the Wellness Team to minimize gaps and improve overall services

7.       Maintain communication processes with the Pelican Falls Centre staff, PFFNHS staff and Wellness Centre staff.

8.       Maintain a culturally safe environment for students who require care while sobering

9.       Provide timely reporting to the Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner of student health needs

10.   Other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

·       Experience in mental health, and/or youth engagement is an asset

·       First Aid training, Mental Health First Aid and Naloxone training is an asset

·       Knowledge of Indigenous culture, language and customs an asset

·       Excellent oral and written communications skills

·       Excellent interpersonal (empathy, compassion, trust) and supportive counselling skills

·       Ability to converse comfortably with adolescents who are intoxicated from substances

·       Self-directed with the ability to work independently as well as within a team

·       Demonstrated ability to complete work

·       Ability to work a flexible work schedule

·       Valid Class G Driver’s License

·       Vulnerable Persons Criminal Background Check

Salary:  Salary level commensurate with education and experience.
