Home Away Worker – Education Department – Female House(#140)

Under the direct supervision of the Residence Manager, the Home Away Worker plays a crucial role in providing care and support to students living away from their family and home community while attending school. The primary responsibility is to ensure a safe, nurturing environment conducive to academic and social success. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of Indigenous culture and traditions and adhere to safety, confidentiality, and privacy policies.

Responsibilities:
1.Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment:

•Prepare the home for student arrival, including onboarding and orientation.
•Plan and provide nutritious meals and snacks, managing grocery shopping.
•Enforce house rules and facilitate daily chores, offering guidance and training.
•Maintain detailed daily reports and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
•Participate in meetings regarding student progress and development.

2.Role Modeling and Mentorship:
•Serve as a role model, establishing healthy boundaries.
•Foster trust and rapport through effective communication.
•Cultivate a supportive environment where students feel comfortable expressingthemselves.

3.Life Skills Training:
•Provide instruction in essential life skills such as time management and seekingassistance.
•Encourage participation in Native Language and Culture activities.
•Support students in mental health and addiction challenges.
•Engage in programming to enhance student connections and support.

4.Team Collaboration and Flexibility:
•Collaborate with colleagues to cover absences and meet organizational demands.
Note: Flexibility is key at IFNA. You may occasionally cover tasks outside your role ensuring comprehensive support for our organizations mission.

 

Position Requirements:
•Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent.
•Minimum 2 years of experience working with First Nations youth.
•Class G Driver’s license with at least 3 years of driving experience and a clean driver’sabstract.
•Ability to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check.
•Certification in CPR/First Aid, Safe Food Handling, Mental Health First Aid, and other relevanttrainings.
•Strong understanding of Indigenous history, traditions, and beliefs; proficiency in an Indigenousdialect is advantageous.
•Familiarity with Indigenous communities and organizations, preferably with prior experience inan Indigenous setting.
•Experience in addressing mental health issues and addictions among youth.
•Knowledge of child development theory and practice.
•Proficient in crisis intervention.
•Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks effective.

 

Salary: $24 – $33/hour
