Job # 172 Mental Health Outreach Worker

Location: IFNA Sioux Lookout or Thunder Bay Office

Are you passionate about providing culturally safe, community-centered support to individuals and families in IFNA communities? We’re seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Health Services Mental Health Outreach Worker. This role involves coordinating outreach events and contributing to urban mobile services while offering valuable insights from community members to enhance the Mental Health Team’s service delivery model. The role will report to the Mental Health and Addictions Assistant Manager.

Responsibilities:

·        Conduct regular outreach to individuals and families in IFNA communities through mobile services, events, and home visits.

·        Assist clients in navigating and referring to clinical services.

·        Incorporate traditional Indigenous healing practices into outreach programs.

·        Collaborate with Elders and cultural healers to ensure services are culturally relevant.

·        Advocate for clients accessing mental health services and resources.

·        Help clients overcome barriers like transportation and language.

·        Collaborate with community programs for coordinated care.

·        Deliver workshops and group activities focused on mental health education and prevention.

·        Facilitate peer support groups to encourage open discussions about mental health.

·        Use a mobile van to support First Nations members in urban areas seeking healthcare.

·        Assist clients navigating complex urban healthcare and mental health systems.

·        Provide harm reduction services, including overdose prevention and supplies.

·        Maintain accurate records of outreach activities, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with standards.

·        Engage in ongoing training to enhance skills in advocacy, cultural safety, and trauma-informed care.

 

Position Requirements:

·        High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in social services or related fields is an asset.

·        Minimum 2 years of experience in outreach or support services, ideally with Indigenous communities.

·        Teamwork experience, particularly with clinical mental health professionals.

·        Knowledge of Indigenous cultures and healing practices, with the ability to integrate cultural safety into services.

·        Strong communication and advocacy skills, capable of building trust with diverse community members.

·        Excellent interpersonal skills, committed to cultural safety and trauma-informed care.

·        Ability to manage confidential client information while maintaining professionalism.

·        Strong organizational skills, with the ability to balance multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.

·        Ability to speak Ojibwe or Oji-Cree is an asset.

·        Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector

·        Ability to prove up to date vaccinations or valid medical exemption

·        Valid driver’s license and clean abstract, with access to a vehicle for transportation.

·        Willingness to travel frequently to IFNA communities, including remote areas.

Salary Range: $60,000 – $69,450

Schedule:  Regular hours from Monday to Friday with weekends, overtime and on-call availability.
