Regional Food Systems Coordinator

Overview:
The Regional Food Systems Coordinator leads the Food Action Network of Northwestern Ontario’s (FAN-NWO) work to strengthen regional food economies, infrastructure, and cooperative development across the region. This is a strategic, high-level role that will support local producers, harvesters, food workers, and eaters, coordinating public engagement and events, and revitalizing the TBayInSeason platform. As a core member of FAN-NWO’s team, the Regional Food Systems Coordinator will work closely with the Executive Director to grow the organization’s capacity and guide long-term planning.

FAN-NWO (formerly the Thunder Bay + Area Food Strategy) is a nonprofit rooted in food sovereignty, equity, and systems change. We work collaboratively with over 40
organizational partners to strengthen community-led food systems through policy, education, advocacy, and network-building. Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain relationships with producers, harvesters, processors, food workers, and eaters across Northwestern Ontario
  • Contribute to organizational development alongside the Executive Director, including strategy, planning, governance, fundraising, evaluation, and grant writing
  • Co-develop the regional food strategy, centering food worker voices and economic circularity
  • Coordinate events and campaigns to amplify local food resilience and innovation
  • Coordinate TBayInSeason, including outreach, planning, and digital strategy to revitalize the platform
  • Represent FAN-NWO in regional networks focused on food systems, economic development, and social enterprise
  • Administrative and other tasks as needed

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to equity, food sovereignty, regional sustainability, and community-led solutions
  • Work experience in food systems, economic development, and/or a related field
  • Strong written and spoken English skills are necessary
  • Strong relationship-building, communication, and facilitation skills
  • Strategic thinking and experience with project coordination or organizational development
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Familiarity with WordPress and other digital engagement and communication tools
  • Existing relationships or networks with Northwestern Ontario producers and food workers is an asset
  • Knowledge of cooperative development and circular economy frameworks is an asset
  • Ability to travel within Northwestern Ontario (a valid drivers license and access to a vehicle is preferred)
  • We especially encourage applications from youth (under 30), as this position may be eligible for youth-specific funding
