Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Band Rep Manager, the Band Representative is a highly motivated individual with exceptional advocacy skills, possessing knowledge of the Ontario Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA). The Band Representative shall be responsible to provide support to families involved with the child welfare system. The Band representative is responsible for a wide range of prevention programs and will work cooperatively with other service providers to design and carry out action/care plans for their clients. The Band Representative must be available to act quickly to resolve any individual or family crisis and provide concrete assistance to clients. The Band Representative must be flexible and available for on-call after hours and during weekends as required. The role of the Band Representative is to protect the collective best interest of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg children and to ensure a culturally appropriate disposition of the case.
Qualifications:
Candidates will be assessed based on the criteria outlined below. It is the candidate’s responsibility to demonstrate that they meet the following qualifications:
• A 2-year post-secondary diploma in Social Work, Law Clerk, Child and Youth Worker, or a related field.
• At least 2 years of experience in Social Services, specifically within First Nations communities.
• Demonstrated strong knowledge of Bill C-92: An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Children, Youth, and Families.
• Experience with Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
• Experience working within a multi-disciplinary team environment
• Experience working with children, youth, and families
•Proven experience in providing crisis intervention support.
• Strong understanding of relevant legislation, including the Child and Family Services Act, Child Well-Being Law, Child Protection Standards, Ministry of Children and Youth Services Regulations, the Mental Health Act, and related guidelines and policy directives.
• Must hold a Class G Ontario Driver’s License, insurance, access to a vehicle, and a clean driver’s abstract.
• Willingness to provide a current, satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
• Valid First Aid/CPR certification
Duties & Responsibilities:
• The Band Representative will work directly with the case manager from the child protection agency and take legal case direction from the Band Representative Manager.
• Work in collaboration with Society Workers, other Band Rep staff, family, and community partners to utilize extended family and/or community members and other First Nations, first and foremost, to interventions that involve out of home placements
• Provide parents with information regarding the legal process and available referrals.
• Must make referrals to the Prevention Service Worker/Family Wellbeing worker to assist families and/or based on Plan of Care.
• Forward brief service requests to the Band Representative Manager for further action
• Responsible for delivering a variety of prevention programs and working with other service providers to create and implement action/care plans for clients.
• The Band Representative will also act quickly to resolve any individual or family crisis and provide concrete assistance to clients
• Provide regular case update reports to the Director of Social Services and the Band Representative team for family reviews.
• Offer outreach services to build relationships with individuals who have been involved in the child welfare system.
• Be familiar with the policies, procedures, and terminology of child welfare agencies serving our membership.
• Attend staff meetings virtually or in person as requested
• Provide opportunities for individuals involved with child welfare to build community connections by organizing attendance at significant First Nation events
Conditions of Employment:
• Satisfactory vulnerable sector check
• Required to work flexible hours- evenings, weekends or as needed with no notice.
• Clean drivers abstract and valid G license
• Optional hybrid work schedule
o One week in community followed by one week in the Thunder Bay office
o Flexibility to alternate between remote and in-person work, as applicable
o A work vehicle will be provided for commuting to and from the community
o Housing provided in community
