Library Technician, Library and Archives

Required Position Full-time Appointment

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager of Operations and in consultation with the Technical Services Coordinator, the Library Technician works in collaboration and consultation with a diverse team of library staff, Librarians, Archivist, and Manager. Working with various library and information systems, the Library Technician is responsible for cataloguing physical and electronic resources in various Library and Archives systems, including the catalogue and institutional repository leading to improved resource discoverability for students. The Library Technician determines appropriate sources for purchase of materials, places and monitors all aspects of orders made directly with selected vendors.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Acquisitions

• Search suitable bibliographic utility sources for cataloguing data and match book requests to a bibliographic record using set options;

• Determine appropriate source for purchase of materials, prepare purchase orders in the library management system, Alma, and maintain acquisitions files and records;

• Create and pay invoices in Alma;

• Receive material, verifying the bibliographic record, perform final editing of records.

Serials

• Identify basic vendor information;

• Check in serial issues and manage the receipt, serial maintenance and claiming of serial issues.

Cataloguing

• Maintain, update, and edit local bibliographic records in the Library and Archives catalogue;

• Perform original and copy cataloguing of all material, print and electronic monographs, including subject analysis and classification;

• Create records for items according to the Library of Congress and RDA (Resource Description and Access) cataloguing standards, local cataloguing rules, and best practices established by the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) Collaborative Futures consortium;

• Describe and classify materials, physical and electronic resources, based on current cataloging, indexing, and metadata standards, such as RDA, LCSH, LCC, MARC;

• Depositing scholarly material in the institutional repository, describing that material using Dublin Core;

• Print appropriate labels, affix to materials, and finalize the physical preparation of Library and

• Archives materials for shelving.

Other duties

• Participate in other projects as assigned by the Librarians, the Archivist and the Manager;

• Work with other team members to ensure that cataloguing decisions are done consistently, following a coherent pattern;

• Keep other team members informed of process changes and refinements;

• Update and upgrade knowledge of cataloguing resources and techniques and search tools;

• May take related courses, undergo formal training, or train other members of the team;

• Consult with the Technical Services Coordinator if a problematic situation arises; and

• Perform other duties directly related to this position as assigned.

Qualifications

• Completion of a Library Technician Diploma is required;

• One to three years of relevant experience, preferably in an academic library;

• Knowledge of the library management system, Omni and Alma, is an asset;

• Proven experience using related technology, such as OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue), Google suite, Microsoft Office;

• Able to quickly adapt to a rapidly changing technology environment;

• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and organizational skills;

• Comprehension of University policies, procedures, and practices;

• Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team;

• Must be detail oriented and possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills;

• Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, is required.

The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
