Job # 170 Mental Health and Addictions Nurse

Location: IFNA Sioux Lookout or Thunder Bay Office

Are you passionate about providing holistic, community-centered mental health services to individuals and families in the IFNA communities? We’re seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Health Services Mental Health and Addictions Nurse. This role will support clients in clinical and community-based settings, with an emphasis on trauma-informed care, cultural safety, and ongoing support for mental health crises. The role will report to the Mental Health and Addictions Manager.

Responsibilities:

·        Will provide mental health care and case management

·        Conducting comprehensive mental health assessments, including biopsychosocial evaluations and addiction support,

·        Developing culturally relevant, trauma-informed, client-centered care plans, providing mental health nursing care and case management for individuals and families in clinical and community settings,

·        Collaborating with community programs for holistic, integrated care and specialized referrals,

·        Following up on treatment and care plans

·        Provide mobile outreach nursing in urban areas for crisis prevention

·        Lead in implementing mental health crisis management plans with healthcare providers

·        Offer immediate crisis support, including assessments, interventions, and referrals.

·        Assist communities in enhancing crisis response plans with local leaders.

·        Engage in emergency operations and mental health outreach during community crises.

·        Create and deliver culturally relevant educational materials and programs promoting mental health awareness in IFNA communities.

·        Develop media messaging related to mental health and addiction.

·        Collaborate with community mental health programs to build local capacity through training and mentorship

·        Maintain accurate client records and treatment plans per legal and ethical standards (PHIPA).

·        Stay updated on best practices in mental health nursing, including trauma-informed and Indigenous-led initiatives

·        Prepare regular reports for supervisors and interdisciplinary teams

·        All other duties as assigned

Position Requirements:

·        Degree in Nursing with current registration in good standing with the Ontario College of Nurses.

·        At least 3 years of nursing experience in mental health and addiction, preferably with Indigenous communities.

·        Experience in children and youth mental health is a plus.

·        Strong knowledge of mental health care, including crisis intervention and trauma-informed, community-based approaches.

·        In-depth understanding of addiction treatment modalities and their biopsychosocial roots.

·        Experience collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary teams in clinical and community settings.

·        Awareness of Indigenous culture, historical impacts of colonization on mental wellness across the lifespan, and health service landscape in northern Ontario and inter-jurisdictional issues affecting First Nations healthcare.

·        Highly motivated, self-directed, and skilled in organization and time management.

·        Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership abilities.

·        Cultural Sensitivity Training is beneficial.

·        Skilled in managing confidential client information and adhering to ethical standards.

·        Capable of working in high-stress environments, especially during community mental health crises.

·        Valid driver’s license and clean abstract, with access to a vehicle required.

·        Familiarity with the independent First Nations Alliance First Nations is also an asset.

Salary Range: $52.75 – 56.66/ hour

Schedule:  Shift work with weekends, overtime and on-call availability.
