Located in beautiful northern Ontario, Nakina Lumber Inc. (Nakina Lumber), a subsidiary of the Buchanan group of companies, is a fully functioning lumber mill, manufacturing finished lumber products from trees harvested from the Ogoki Forest. With up to 120 employees at any given time, Nakina Lumber provides a variety of employment opportunities for individuals, from general labourer positions, which require no prior experience, to skilled trade positions, such as industrial electrician, millright, saw filer and heavy equipment mechanic and, new to the Company, a Supportive Counsellor and Case Manager to support employees. Various supervisory opportunities also exist, across all aspects of the operation. Position Overview:

Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, the Supportive Counsellor & Case Manager provides direct one-on-one support for employees of Nakina Lumber. The Supportive Counsellor & Case Manager works within a Recovery framework, applying a trauma-informed approach, providing short-term supportive counselling, support with systems navigation, referrals out and ongoing case management for employees, as required.

This is a new and unique position to Nakina Lumber. • To complete an initial assessment of need, using evidence-based tools to inform service(s) to be provided, level of service intensity and required service referrals.
• To provide short-term supportive counselling for individuals 18 year of age and older.
• To provide support for individuals in navigating community, social and health systems.
• To provide short-term and long-term case management support, based on assessed need, and work collaboratively with external service providers to ensure services are coordinated and streamlined.
• To provide education, information and referral(s) out, as part of case management activities.
• To liaise with the most appropriate community agencies and/or care providers, facilitating the removal of barriers to care and ensuring the wrapping around of services to best meet the holistic needs of individuals.
• To engage in ongoing assessment of individuals’ needs and adapt support plans accordingly.
• To document all individual contacts, counselling and case management activities in the electronic client record, applying College standards as they relate to clinical documentation.
• To maintain confidentiality and work in a manner consistent with ethical guidelines of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) or the applicable College.
• To participate in community and regional Committees, as assigned.
• To participate in regularly scheduled supervision and the performance enhancement process.
• To develop personal goals for continued learning and engagement in ongoing development and self-evaluation.
• To participate as an active and contributing member of the Nakina Lumber Inc. team.
• To participate in team meetings, actively contributing to discussion, planning and problem solving.
• To follow all policies and procedures as they relate to Occupational Health & Safety and Company operations.
• To address concerns directly with the Human Resources Manager, in a timely manner, and to support problem solving around the concern(s) brought forward.
• To conduct oneself in a manner that contributes to a culturally safe, inclusive and respectful workplace.
• Consistent attendance for scheduled hours of work.
• Other duties as may be assigned from time-to-time.


• Social Service Worker Diploma (SSW) or Bachelors of Social Work (BSW) preferred, with registration with the OCSWSSW, in good standing; consideration also given to Registered Nurses (RNs) or Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), in good standing, who have worked in a counselling or case management function; consideration will also be given to individuals who have completed post-secondary education in a related field and have at least five years of relevant experience, inclusive of mental health and addiction experience.
• Experience working within a Recovery framework and/or knowledge of the principles of Recovery and strategies for applying the same.
• Experience applying trauma-informed practices in the provision of individual supports.
• Experience providing supportive counselling, utilizing a solution-focused brief intervention model.
• Experience providing case management support and supporting individuals in systems navigation.
• Expert knowledge of programs and services across Greenstone, the rural District of Thunder Bay and the City of Thunder Bay and/or knowledge and comfort in researching and engaging the same.
• Sound clinical acumen.
• Knowledge of and experience with clinically sound documentation standards.
• An understanding of the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) and the ability to effectively apply privacy practices within a single company/client setting and rural living context.
• Training in CBT or Mindfulness Practice is considered an asset.
• Training in ASIST or Mental Health First Aid is considered an asset.
• Training and current certification in NVCI is considered an asset.
• Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
• An understanding of the impacts of intergenerational trauma in the indigenous community and a sound understanding of culturally relevant approaches in service delivery.
• Clear understanding of scope of practice as it relates to the position and in keeping with the applicable regulatory College and performance of duties within this scope.
• Advanced skills in written and oral communication.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to speak French is considered an asset.
• Access to a personal vehicle and valid driver’s license is considered an asset.
• An ability to commit to reliable and consistent attendance.
• A strong work ethic.
• An ability to climb stairs.
