Location: Thunder Bay & District, Kenora & District, and Rainy River District
Job Type: Part-time / Casual / Flexible
Rate of Pay: Negotiated directly with families
Education: Some college/university preferred
Role Description
Independent Support Workers provide vital social, recreational, and personal support to children, adults, and seniors living with a disability or chronic health condition. This support gives family caregivers a much-needed break from their caregiving duties and can be provided in the family home or out in the community. Respite looks different for every family. Your responsibilities may include helping with daily tasks, providing encouragement, or simply being a steady source of companionship. At its heart, this role empowers individuals to live life their own way through compassionate, respectful, and professional care.
What does it mean to be an Independent Support Worker?
Respite NOW maintains a database of pre-screened Independent Support Workers to match with local families.
Please note: You will work directly with the families, not as an employee of Respite NOW. As an independent contractor or an employee of the family, you and the family will collaborate directly to decide your schedule, payment details, and specific daily responsibilities.
Qualifications & Assets
• Experience and/or education supporting individuals with a disability or chronic health condition.
• A good working knowledge of local community resources and programming.
• A clear Vulnerable Sector Check.
• Standard First Aid + CPR certification is considered a strong asset.
• Access to a reliable vehicle is considered an asset.
• Self-motivated, committed to inclusion, and passionate about making a positive impact.
The Onboarding Process
Successful applicants will be granted an interview and must be prepared to:
1. Provide three work and/or volunteer-related references.
2. Consent to and provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Check.
3. Attend a Respite NOW Independent Support Worker Information Session.
