The Summer Student – Yard & Facility Maintenance will assist Northern Waterworks Incorporated (NWI) Operators by completing yard maintenance, painting, and other property and building maintenance tasks.
Position: Summer Student – Yard & Facility Maintenance (Canada Summer Jobs)
Location: Multiple positions available in various locations
- Two positions in Red Lake
- One position in Atikokan
- One position in Sioux Lookout
- One position in Ignace
- One position in Marathon
Temporary Full Time: 40-hour work week, Anticipated Term: 8–16 weeks, depending on availability
Hourly Wage: $18.00
Prerequisites
- These positions are funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. Applicants must meet program eligibility requirements:
- Age: 15 to 30 years (inclusive) at the start of employment.
- Must have Canadian citizen or permanent resident status in Canada.
- Must hold a valid G Ontario Driver’s Licence, with a clean driver’s abstract.
- Experience with yard care, painting, maintenance, or similar work is considered an asset.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine yard maintenance including grass cutting, trimming, raking, sweeping, litter pick-up, and basic landscaping.
- Assist with painting and surface preparation (scraping, sanding, cleaning, masking) for fences, railings, doors, and other plant/site infrastructure as directed.
- Support general housekeeping and cleanliness of site buildings, grounds, tools, and work areas.
- Use and maintain basic hand and power tools safely (training provided where required).
- Assist with light labour tasks such as moving materials, organizing storage areas, and setting up/cleaning up job sites.
- Follow all health and safety procedures and legislation, immediately reporting hazards, incidents, or equipment issues to the Municipal Manager.
- Complete other yard and building maintenance tasks as assigned
Attributes
- Ability to work safely and follow instructions, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions and performing physically demanding tasks (lifting, bending, walking, repetitive movements).
- Basic knowledge of yard tools/equipment (e.g., lawnmower, trimmer) is an asset; willingness to learn is required.
- Attention to detail and pride in maintaining a clean, safe, and professional-looking site.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions
- Lifting and carrying (materials, tools, equipment)
- Walking/standing for extended periods
- Bending, reaching, and repetitive movements
- Working outdoors in various weather conditions
- Exposure to noise, dust, and odours typical of yard and facility work (PPE provided as required)
- Environmental Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors at/around a water treatment and wastewater facilities.
