ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Marjorie House provides short-term shelter in a caring environment for women and their children who are victims of gender-based violence in their intimate relationships.
Marjorie House also offers outreach services to women at risk of or who are experiencing violence outside of the shelter. In addition, the organization also provides education and awareness related to gender-based violence and healthy relationships.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Executive Director is the chief administrator and spokesperson of the organization, responsible for overall leadership, strategic direction, and day-to-day operations. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director ensures the effective delivery of programs and services aligned with the organization’s vision, mission, and values, particularly within an anti-racist, anti-oppressive feminist framework addressing violence against women and children.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Post-secondary degree in public administration, women’s studies, social work, community development, or a related field
- Minimum five years of senior management experience in a social service setting.
- Supervision in a unionized environment an asset
- Demonstrated experience in financial management, fundraising, program development, and organizational leadership
- Experience operating within a not-for-profit organization
Knowledge
- Violence against women and children, including dynamics of abuse and its impacts
- Anti-racist/anti-oppressive feminist frameworks
- Federal and provincial legislation (e.g., labour laws, human rights, child and family services, privacy legislation)
- Community resources, diversity, and cultural competencies
- Funding structures, grant processes, and financial accountability
- Organizational policy development and best practices
Skills & Abilities
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
- Strategic thinking with the ability to develop and implement action plans
- Financial planning, budgeting, and reporting expertise
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in high-pressure environments
- Effective collaboration with government, community agencies, and stakeholders
- Skilled in conflict resolution, mediation, and team leadership
- Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
- Criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening
- Ability to work flexible hours and participate in an on-call rotation
- Preference for bilingual (French/English) candidates
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Leadership & Governance
- Serve as chief administrator and spokesperson for the organization
- Implement policies and decisions of the Board of Directors
- Attend and support Board and committee meetings; provide timely reports and recommendations
- Support Board development, training, and strategic planning
- Ensure alignment with organizational vision, mission, and values
2. Administration & Operations
- Oversee daily operations and ensure effective service delivery across all programs
- Maintain compliance with organizational policies, procedures, and legislation
- Develop, review, and monitor internal and external communications and reporting
- Coordinate program evaluations, risk management, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Ensure timely completion of reports, proposals, and funding requirements
3. Financial Management
- Develop and manage annual budgets in collaboration with the Board/Treasurer
- Monitor expenditures and ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability
- Oversee financial systems, audits, and reporting requirements
- Identify and secure funding opportunities, including grant writing and donor relations
- Ensure effective use of financial, human, and physical resources
4. Program & Strategic Development
- Identify service gaps and develop responsive programs and initiatives
- Lead long-term strategic and operational planning
- Develop policies, protocols, and service models aligned with best practices
- Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness and outcomes
5. Human Resources & Staff Management
- Provide leadership and supervision to management and staff
- Oversee recruitment, hiring, performance evaluation, and professional development
- Ensure compliance with labour laws, collective agreements, and human rights standards
- Support a positive, respectful, and collaborative work environment
- Facilitate conflict resolution and staff mediation as needed
6. Community Relations & Public Engagement
- Act as liaison with government agencies, funders, and community partners
- Promote awareness of organizational services and issues related to family violence
- Represent the organization at meetings, conferences, and public events
- Respond to media inquiries and support public education initiatives
- Build and maintain strategic partnerships and collaborations
7. Policy, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure adherence to all relevant legislation, policies, and funding requirements
- Oversee policy development and organizational compliance
- Monitor emerging research, trends, and community needs
- Assess and mitigate organizational and program risks
8. Organizational Culture & Staff Development
- Foster a supportive, inclusive, and culturally responsive workplace
- Promote teamwork, communication, and professional growth
- Encourage ongoing learning and development among staff
- Model ethical, respectful, and professional behavior
9. Resident & Service Support
- Support program leadership in delivering safe, effective services to survivors and their dependents
- Ensure services are survivor centered and responsive to diverse needs
ACCOUNTABILITY
The Executive Director is directly accountable to the Board of Directors and is responsible for ensuring organizational effectiveness, financial integrity, and the delivery of high-quality services.
