PURPOSE AND SUMMARY

The Cultural Coordinator is a member of Dilico’s foundational culture-based support team and, under the direction of the Program Manager, is responsible for the coordination and delivery of cultural programming across the agency, with a focus on child and youth healing programs.

This position maintains flexible hours, and although most services are provided during a typical 9-5 workday, evening and weekend programming does occur with appropriate scheduling. This position is also expected to travel across the Robinson Superior Treaty Area when necessary.

The Cultural Coordinator will plan and coordinate a variety of programming for Dilico’s Clinical and Children’s Services that focuses on Anishinabek traditional cultural-based healing to promote individual, family, and community wellness. The Cultural Coordinator will collaborate with the Cultural Team to explore incorporating a wide-range of cultural supports housed across the agency, and will continue to learn and develop their own cultural knowledge base.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Delivery

More specifically, the Cultural Coordinator, will work with and consult with their leadership team to develop and deliver high quality Cultural Programs that meet the needs of children, youth, and families for the enhancement and development of positive cultural identity. Some of the day-to-day tasks for the successful candidate will be to:

  • Develop and implement a Traditional Healing Program for children and youth in Intensive Treatment services.
  • Develop and deliver daily cultural activities appropriate for children and youth in intensive treatment.
  • Will plan and implement cultural program centered on client needs, with insight and recommendations from staff and management.
  • Provide recommendations for traditional healing methods when individuals request services, such as Healing Circles, Grieving Circles, and Going Home Ceremonies, among others.
  • Host Cultural Evenings as required.
  • Work with various Mental Health Programs to enhance cultural programming for clients.
  • Aid in pre-treatment services as required
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and deliver cultural workshops, activities, teachings, ceremonies and healing practices for clients and agency staff.

Additional duties will include program support to:

  • Serve as a resource to the Oshkiniig Mashkaziiwin, Good Path and Ojichaagwan Ani-Mino-Ayateam.
  • Provide support to other agency services to deliver cultural programs as needed.
  • Participate in supervision and help in the development of services provided.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings and appropriate training sessions.
  • Act as a resource to ensure cultural knowledge and practices are maintained.
  • Ensure clients are aware of cultural resources available to them to maintain their cultural identity once live-in services are completed.
  • Plan, develop, and participate in Special Projects you create, or those that may be assigned.
  • Lead and participate in traditional or spiritual practices for meetings or cultural activities as required.

Community Relations

  • Promotes the Agency’s Vision, Mission and Core Values
  • Establish and maintain a collaborative relationship between Dilico Anishnabek Family Care and First Nation communities to ensure effective service delivery to families.
  • Establish and maintain purposeful relationships with community service providers and First Nation organizations.
  • Acts in a professional manner both when working and not working and is a positive role model for clients and families.

Organizational Responsibilities

As a representative of Dilico, the Employee is responsible for:

  • Applying Anishinabek culture, values, traditions and teachings into programming where possible.
  • Ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and safekeeping of agency records.
  • Participating constructively in the supervision process with the immediate Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Work Experience

The education requirements for this role are dynamic and all applicants with experiential learning and post-secondary education will be considered. Preference will be given to individuals who have a combination of cultural or traditional knowledge and post-secondary education in areas such as Native Studies or a Human Services diploma. A minimum of 3 years experience in Cultural programming for children and their families is preferred, but any combination of skills, education, and/or life learning specific to traditional knowledge will be considered.

An individual of Anishinabe ancestry with understanding, practice and sharing of Anishinabe history, culture, traditions, ceremonies and values is preferred.

Some skill and abilities this person will possess include:

  • Ability to use computer systems to document or chart client encounters and program service delivery.
  • Prepare statistical reports regarding cultural service activity and planning.
  • Ability to establish and maintain purposeful relationships with clients, subordinates, colleagues, other relevant organizations, staff and management.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, and personal commitment to the Anishinabe way of life.
  • Ability to guide and support Anishinabe people in their desires and efforts to embrace
  • Strong commitment to helping Anishinabe children, their families and First Nation communities by providing services in ways that respect Anishinabe cultural and spiritual practices.
  • Commitment to providing services in the Anishinabe context of extended family and community involvement.
  • Ability to take direction and to work within the policies, procedures, and guidelines, vision and mission, and core values of the Agency.
  • Ability to access Anishinabe Elders, Traditional Advisors and Healers through customary procedures.
  • Excellent planning, organization, interpersonal and liaison skills.
  • Knowledge of Customary Care and the philosophy of service development and delivery; the communities and family structure, as well as local Anishinabe customs and traditions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check
  • Ability to work flexible hours in relation to program service delivery requirements.
  • Must possess a Class “G” Drivers License, have a personal vehicle and $1 million liability insurance.

 

Hours of Work: 32.5 hours per week

Salary Range:$56,000.00 To $63,200.00 Annually
