NNEC is a non-profit educational organization. Under the direction of the Sioux Lookout District Chiefs, NNEC delivers secondary and post-secondary education programs and services for First Nations people. NNEC operates Pelican Falls First Nations High School, Pelican Falls Centre, Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School, Wahsa Distance Education Centre and has offices in Lac Seul (head office), Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay. Education System Navigator / Re-Engagement Coordinator
DFCHS / PFFNHS / Wahsa Distant Education Centre
General:
Under the direction of the Director of Education the Education System Navigator / Re-Engagement Program Coordinator will work with the NNEC Principal’s, second level support staff, and school administration. The Education System Navigator / Re-engagement Coordinator will ensure there is student support in navigating various sectors, such as education, health and justice. The Education System Navigator / Re-engagement Coordinator will ensure there is outreach and contact with students who have been disengaged from a secondary program for at least one semester. The Educational System Navigator / Re-engagement Coordinator must be self-motivated individual with excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
Responsibilities:
a) Possess knowledge of the education system (First Nation and provincial), health care system, and/or justice system;
b) Respond to changes as they occur, at both the local and provincial system level;
c) Build healthy relationships with youth and the community to address youths’ urgent needs;
d) Advocate on a student’s behalf both within or outside a board/tribal council;
e) Act as a resource person and point of contact for students and their families; and
f) Seek to remove barriers by engaging in collaboration across education, health, social and justice systems.:
g) Undertake research to identify the barriers which make students disengaged and unsuccessful in current programming, and find comprehensive solutions to overcome these barriers;
h) Implement outreach and re-engagement programs for those NNEC students who have been disengaged from a secondary program for at least one semester;
i) Design a comprehensive reengagement model to reach students
in all NNEC communities;
j) Working with the NNEC transitions team to provide information and support to assist students in navigating their education choices, including registering for a secondary
school program.
Qualifications:
· Post-Secondary education in the fields of Social Work, Justice, Education and/or related fields;
· Two years’ experience working in Social Work, Justice or Education;
· A knowledge of and sensitivity to First Nations history, culture, and student issues;
· Experience working first hand with First Nations youth;
· Excellent communications skills, fluency in a local First Nations dialect is an asset;
· Must be self-motivated, organized and able to work as a team member and independently;
· Must be willing to travel and work flexible hours
LOCATION: Thunder Bay / Sioux Lookout, Ontario
SALARY: Commensurate with education and experience.
