Student Public Health Inspector (12-weeks Contract: May 11, 2026 – Jul 31, 2026) – Environmental Health

Position Summary:

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is seeking a field placement student to fulfill the requirements of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors Board of Certification and to assist in the delivery of applicable Ontario Public Health Standards to communities throughout the Thunder Bay District. Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Health Programs, the successful candidate will carry out the duties and responsibilities related to a general Environmental Public Health Program. The applicant must have knowledge, experience and technical skills related to the Health Protection and Promotion Act and other applicable legislation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·      Inspect local food establishments, special events, child-care and log-term facilities, public beaches and pools under the direction of a Public Health Inspector.

·      Participate in the rabies prevention and Vector-borne disease program – including West Nile virus surveillance.

·      Monitor drinking water by sampling/inspecting water supplies.

·      Inspect small drinking water systems.

·      Investigate environmental public health and health hazard issues.

·      Provide education to general public.

·      Submit activity reports and record data for future use.

QUALIFICATIONS:

·      Student/Recent Graduate of Environmental Public Health Program

·      Valid Ontario Driver’s License and provide own transportation

·      Ability to exercise good judgement and discretion; ability to work independently; ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with the public.

·      Proficiency with computers and related software.

·      Education and work experience related to Occupational Health Sciences and Non-Communicable Diseases an asset.

·      Willing to work flexible hours and travel throughout the District.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY:

·         Follow all policies and procedures to ensure personal safety and safety of others.

·         Report any equipment or safety problems to supervisor.
