Direct Care Worker – Job Description
Superior Greenstone Association for Community Living (SGACL) provides person-centred community and residential supports to people who have a developmental disability.

Direct Care Worker’s will provide support to each person based on their personal needs, interests and desires.
Job Function
To support people who have a developmental disability to develop lifestyles that promote their participation, inclusion and citizenship in the community and to develop skills to achieve their personal goals.
Pre-Employment Requirements
- Ability to obtain a clean vulnerable sector check.
Valid First Aid & CPR Certification.
Ability to complete a 2-step TB skin test.
A commitment to organizational values and proficiency in exercising sound judgment.
Excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills, along with basic computer literacy.
A diploma in developmental or social services is considered an asset, however, on-the-job skills training is available.
Valid driver’s license.
Post-Employment Requirements
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training.
- First Aid Certification.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
With leadership from the Supports & Services Supervisor, Direct Care Workers will:
- Follow all SGACL policies and procedures.
- Perform all duties in keeping with SGACL’s Service Principles and Statement of Rights.
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times.
- Work independently of and collaboratively with team members
- Participate in the completion and annual review of Individual Support Plans (ISP’s):
- Assist people in identifying and achieving their personal goals.
- Document past, present and future outcomes.
- Assist people to create a financial support plan.
- As outlined in a person’s Individual Support Plan:
- Support citizenship and access to the community.
- Provide personal care, assist with bathing, administer medications, participate in meal preparation and household duties.
- Support the care of personal finances.
- Arrange for or provide transportation to recreational and leisure activities and medical appointments.
- Encourage relationships with family and friends.
- Support skill-building, including (but not limited to): domestic, employment, communication and health maintenance skills.
- Document daily activities, changes in health and unusual occurrences.
- Report and document incidents.
- Assist people to choose and access community, housing, social, health and/or legal services as needed.
- Consult with family, friends, medical professionals and other agencies that are significant in a person’s life.
- Facilitate development of meaningful relationships between people, family, neighbours, community and workplaces.
- On an annual basis, using agency materials, educate the people we serve on their rights and how to identify and report abuse.
- Competently manage crisis situations with the assistance of the Supports & Services Supervisor or On-Call Manager.
- Orientate new employees to on-the-job duties.
- Participate in on-going professional development.
- Attend training and team meetings on a regular basis.
- Follow Health and Safety Policies and Procedures, reporting and documenting unsafe working conditions, unsafe or faulty equipment, injuries or incidents immediately.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and lower: Constantly up to 5 kg, frequently up to 11 kg and occasionally up to 25 kg.
- Operation of lifting equipment, as required.
- Ability to stand and to walk for extended periods; frequent sitting.
- Occasional awkward postures during support activities.
Shifts: Scheduled as per current Collective Agreement.
Starting Date: To be determined.
Wage Range: Starting Wage of $26.17 as per current Collective Agreement.
