NNEC is a non-profit educational organization. Under the direction of the Sioux Lookout District Chiefs, NNEC delivers secondary and post-secondary education programs and services for First Nations people.  NNEC operates Pelican Falls First Nations High School, Pelican Falls Centre, Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School, Wahsa Distance Education Centre and has offices in Lac Seul (head office), Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay.  NNEC welcomes applications for the following position:

REGISTERED NURSE

 Secondary Student Services Program (SSSP)

Thunder Bay, ON

The Secondary Student Services Program (SSSP) requires one full-time Registered Nurse to provide health care services and support to students.  This position will work afternoon and evening shifts rotating between 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and/or 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will require after hours availability.  This position will report to the Manager of Student Safety or designate.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide medical health services to students
  2. Assess medical needs of students, determine treatment plans, provide follow up support
  3. Refer complex needs to physician or other health professional(s)
  4. Administer medications, provide first aid, assist in emergency situations etc.
  5. Maintain/update on-site clinic and confidential student medical records
  6. Ability to assess and provide health care needs to students
  7. Work in collaboration with SSSP; management and identified individuals internally and externally to ensure implementation of treatment plan, including First Nations Partners.
  8. Work in collaboration with other nursing supports at the student’s school (DFC or Provincial)
  9. Maintain a safe, clean, welcoming and positive environment always
  10. Prepare evaluations and summaries of students including recommendations
  11. Develop or assist in developing treatment plans for students
  12. Work closely with SSSP staff to support students who are “at risk” or “in crisis”
  13. Provide Public Health advice on prevention, designing health campaigns as requested
  14. Respond to all inquiries received from parents/guardians; teachers and/or students in a timely manner.
  15. Use appropriate counselling processes and techniques for individual and group sessions when needed.
  16. Provide students with moral support and encouragement
  17. Prepare evaluations and summaries of student, including recommendations for next school year
  18. Promote well-being and access to programs and services, provide referrals to proper support resources
  19. Provide daily or weekly check-ins with students as required
  20. Participate in team meetings as required
  21. Liaise with other organizations, partners and/or professionals
  22. Other duties as assigned

 QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Registered Nurse or Bachelor of Science in Nursing is mandatory;
  • Must be in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid
  • Knowledge and understanding of Native culture, traditions and lifestyles
  • Excellent leadership, motivation, and problem-solving skills
  • Fluency in Oji-Cree, Cree or Ojibway is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently
  • Able to work effectively and collaboratively with others
  • Strong communication skills
  • Valid Class “G” Driver’s License
  • Must be willing to travel and work flexible hours

SALARY: $73,255 to $90,094

All staff are compensated 13 weeks of vacation either with vacation days, monetary compensation or a combination of both.
