Job Summary:
Couchiching First Nation is seeking a Garden Coordinator to join our Economic Development team. In this vital role, the Garden Coordinator reports to the Economic Development Officer. Moreover, as the Garden Coordinator, you hold responsibility for the building, maintenance and operations of the Community Food and Medicine Gardens. Furthermore, this position works with various programs internally and externally to host workshops with the intention of encouraging community members to increase participation. These workshops focus on youth and elders’ sense of community around growing food, access to gardening and food preparation education, and opportunities for community members to grow and take home traditional medicines.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills, project management skills, and initiative. As a result, this is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to play a key role in building and maintaining the gardens to encourage education and participation within the community.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Diploma or Degree in Food Science, Agriculture, Botany, Project Management, Construction, Business, or a related field.
- While a post-secondary education is preferred, candidates with a combination of relevant experience and education may also be considered.
- A genuine interest in gardening and working outdoors.
- Knowledge of Couchiching First Nation, its programs and local resources.
- Willingness to learn about Traditional Indigenous gardening practices and plant knowledge.
- Possess an understanding and respect for Couchiching First Nations culture, traditions, practices, and lifestyles.
- Prior experience working with Indigenous communities and/or organizations is preferred.
- Reliability and punctuality are essential.
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently as well as part of a team.
- Ability to network and create connections with other First Nations with experience in gardening.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities and/or organizations is preferred.
- Must pass a vulnerable sector check.
- Valid G level driver’s license is an asset.
- Ability to provide a Criminal Record Check.
- Ability to speak Ojibway is considered an asset.
- Commitment to maintain the highest level of confidentiality at all times.
