Indigenous Two Spirit & LGBTQ+ Mentor

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

The Indigenous Two Spirit and LGBTQ+ Mentor will provide support and services for gender and sexuality diverse people within the community of Thunder Bay, and will utilize existing Indigenous community capacity to support self-defined youth needs from a culture-based framework. The Mentor will work with social sector partners and stakeholders in the community to help build capacity by designing and enhancing services with an emphasis of increasing knowledge and developing culturally competent practices that help promote Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) human rights. Further, the Mentor will support a Trauma Informed approach to community-building and inclusion.

 

Findings and activities generated through this project will help to improve Friendship Centre and community capacity regarding service provision for Two-Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQ+ young people.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred Community College, University Degree or equivalent in Social Services and/or a minimum of 2 years work experience in a social justice services environment.
  • Knowledge of Two Spirit and LGBTQ+ issues, familiarity with the LGBTQ+ community and human rights, and awareness of existing local, provincial, and federal supports and services.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture and experience working with Indigenous persons; understanding of the northern cultural environment; knowledge of an Indigenous language(s) will be considered an asset.
  • Lived experience as a Two Spirited LGBTQ+ community member will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in community service planning, delivery and administration.
    Group facilitation, team building and decision-making skills; ability to problem solve and take initiative.
  • Excellent oral, written, analytical and technical skills.
    Self-motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision in a team-oriented setting.
  • Ability to lead, plan and coordinate / facilitate meetings, both virtually and in-person.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including database applications.
  • Excellent case and file management skills, stress management and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport; effective verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and/or weekends.
  • A clear criminal reference check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Clearance is a condition of employment.
  • Must have a valid Ontario driver’s license and reliable transportation.
