POSITION SUMMARY:  Under the general supervision of the Operations Supervisors, the Operations Technician is responsible for the installation and repair of Tbaytel products and services, outside plant infrastructure, and related telecommunications equipment. The Operations Technician is end-to-end solution oriented, and driven to provide a superior customer experience.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Installs structured cabling at customers’ premises for Voice and Data services.

2. Performs service and repair work, from the CO, remotes, and outside plant infrastructure to customer premise equipment.

3. Installs, splices, and tests copper & fiber cables, service drops, terminals and closures.

4. Installs and maintains all support structures including but not restricted to aerial messenger, poles, anchors, guys, cabinets, manholes and ducts.

5. Performs cable fault analysis to sectionalize troubles; locates faults and repairs overhead and underground cables (copper, fiber optic); diagnoses and repairs defective cable pairs using different testing apparatus.

6. Prepares fiber cables for the fiber management system, installs and maintains FOTS enclosures and monitoring equipment for cables and associated equipment for use with carrier and fiber optic transmission.

7. Prepares copper cables for pressurization and monitoring; installs program devices and maintains the pressurization systems and computerized detection systems.

8. Locates and marks underground telephone plant.

9. Provisions, tests and maintains commercial Voice and Data services.  Installs and maintains related equipment including but not limited to data circuits, hosted systems, switches and peripheral terminal equipment, IP and networking equipment, digital TV, and security systems.

10. Provides and updates as-built information to maintain records, drawings and maps. Liaises with Engineering on work order revisions, construction status, design improvements, quality control and cost savings.

11. Operates various types of equipment used in construction.

12. Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of and complies with all legislation and Tbaytel policies relevant to the position and the duties performed.

13. Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

– A completed Electrical, Electronics, or Instrumentation Engineering degree or diploma; or a related one-year post-secondary certificate in Electrical Techniques, from an accredited College.

– Proficiency in the use of various computer software programs, such as email, MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Google Drive (Sheets, Docs, Slides) with the technical ability to learn new software as required.

– Ability to communicate with the public and fellow employees in a courteous and tactful manner

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

– Completed diploma in electrical/electronic engineering technology from a university or college

– Previous experience in Construction

–  Previous telecommunications experience

– Ability to communicate via American Sign Language (ASL)

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

– Successfully undergo a satisfactory Criminal Records Check.

– Must hold and maintain a valid class G driver’s license, a city license and current satisfactory Driver’s Abstract (determined by COTB Fleet)

– Must acquire and maintain a valid ‘DZ’ and upgrade to an ‘A’ license upon request from the corporation

– Must not be colour blind. Able to differentiate coloured wiring and fibres

– Capable of performing demanding physical labour, including lifting 75+ pounds occasionally with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 50+ pounds

– Able to work at heights, climb and work freely on poles, ladders, and aerial mobile equipment.

– Work shift work as required
