Vector-Borne Disease Student (18-weeks Contract: Apr 20, 2026 – Aug 21, 2026) – Environmental Health

Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Health, the student will participate in Vector-borne Disease activities, including mosquito and tick surveillance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under direction the student will:
· Deploy and maintain light-traps used to monitor mosquito communities throughout the District of Thunder Bay.
· Submit mosquito samples for identification and for West Nile virus testing.
· Identify larval mosquito habitats within the city of Thunder Bay.
· Examine catch basins if weather permits to determine the percentage of catch basins that support mosquitoes, the species present, and their abundance.
· Assist in active and passive tick surveillance.
· Passive surveillance includes intake of ticks submitted to the health unit and providing follow-up information.
· Active surveillance involves physically dragging for ticks.
· This requires physical work and a willingness to work alone in the bush.
· Provide information to the general public about the risk of contracting West Nile virus and Lyme disease.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Some Post-Secondary Education (College or University – Sciences discipline preferred)
- Willing to work flexible hours and travel in the district
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle
- Good recording and reporting skills
- Previous “Bear Wise” bear awareness training an asset
- Experience working with small animals an asset.
- Experience working in the bush an asset.
