The Water/Wastewater Operator, First Nations Project oversees the water treatment plant(s) and water distribution system(s) to ensure water quality for residents, in compliance with Federal, Provincial, and Municipal legislation, policies, and standards. Responsibilities include collaborating with the NWI Team of Professionals across various tasks such as asset inspections and commissioning, operator relief and ORO services, emergency response, maintenance, repairs, and other professional water operator services.
Location: Thunder Bay or within Northwestern Ontario
Permanent Full Time (40-hour work week)
Knowledge
- Minimum, Grade 12 or GED. Post-secondary education in a related field is considered an asset.
- Must hold and maintain a valid G driver’s license.
- Must hold and maintain a Wastewater Treatment Operator Class 1 Certificate or higher.
- Must hold and maintain a Water Treatment Operator Class 1 Certificate or higher.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment. This requires basic working knowledge of electrical and plumbing.
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods, WHMIS & First Aid Certification is considered an asset.
Responsibilities
- Managing wastewater treatment/ sewage treatment, and sewage collection.
- Operating and monitoring equipment I.e., Pumps, valves, filters, and other machinery involved in the treatment process.
- Compliance and reporting to demonstrate compliance with environmental standards.
- Conducting water quality test and monitoring the quality of water being treated.
- Troubleshooting any issues of equipment and perform routine maintenance tasks to keep the treatment facility operating efficiently.
- Work in accordance with established safety protocols and procedures.
- Adhere to regulatory and internal procedures and guidelines.
- Performing other duties as required.

- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Capacity to work in confined, noisy, or hazardous plant environments.
- This role will require frequent travel between various water and wastewater plants located in different cities throughout Ontario. The incumbent should be adaptable and prepared to navigate diverse sites, ensuring operational consistency and safety across multiple locations, sometimes in remote or challenging settings.
