Position: Conservation Area Labourer (4 positions)
Reports To:  Lands Manager and Field Operations Lead Hand
Duration: Thunder Bay Ontario
Date: 15 weeks – May 19, 2026 to August 28, 2026
Hours: Full time; 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday
Salary: $18.60 per hour

General Overview:

The employee will assist in the maintenance and minor development of local Conservation Areas and along the Neebing-McIntyre Floodway, including river clean-up on LRCA-owned lands. Conservation Area Labourers will be expected to complete inspection check lists, ensuring that all amenities, trail systems, and signs are intact and free of debris, damage or litter.

Conservation Area maintenance duties will include grass cutting, painting, trail maintenance, garbage removal, general areas maintenance and other duties as assigned. Additional maintenance on other LRCA-properties will also be required.

On occasion, Conservation Area Lands Labourers will also contribute to ongoing stewardship initiatives including, invasive species pulls, shoreline and riparian habitat revegetation projects, and maintenance of flower beds and pollinator gardens on LRCA-owned properties.

Conservation Area Labourers may be asked to participate in public events, such as Silver Harbour Day and the Little Trout Bay Fish Derby, engaging with attendees to share information about the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority’s mandate and programs.

Duties:

1)      Conservation Area Maintenance

  • Grass cutting
  • Trail maintenance
  • Garbage removal
  • Washroom maintenance
  • Lands inspection checklist
  • Sign cleaning, installation, and maintenance
  • Painting
  • Minor maintenance and care for field equipment
  • Cleaning and upkeep of fleet trucks
  • Riverbank clean up
  • Transport maintenance equipment to job sites, occasionally hauling a trailer.

2)      Stewardship Projects

  • Invasive species pulls
  • Plantings and restoration activities
  • Plant cultivation
  • Weeding and maintenance of conservation area pollinator gardens
  • When required, assist with Bathing Beach monitoring program and sea lamprey trapping.

3)      Public Events

  • Assist with parking organization and temporary signage
  • Communicate with the public about the LRCA and Conservation Areas
  • Assist with the LRCA outreach table during public events
  • Conservation Area maintenance at event

Education & Skills Required:

  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
  • Experience operating landscaping equipment such as riding lawn mowers, grass trimmers, and hedge trimmers is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and Teams.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal to no supervision.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors and in adverse weather conditions.
  • First aid, CPR, and defensive driving training is an asset.
  • Must be available for full term of position.
