Job summary

Wabshki Penasi School is seeking an Early Childhood Assistant to support early years programming by helping provide a safe, nurturing, and structured learning environment. The ECA works under the direction of the classroom teacher/Early Childhood Educator to support children’s learning, routines, and well-being.

Key responsibilities (job duties)

  • Assist with daily classroom routines for young children (arrival, transitions, meals/snacks, rest time, cleanup).
  • Support children’s learning through play-based activities (small groups, early literacy/numeracy, arts, outdoor learning).
  • Supervise children and ensure a safe environment (classroom, playground, field trips as needed).
  • Help prepare materials and learning centres (set-up, sanitation/cleaning, organizing supplies).
  • Support children’s social-emotional development using positive guidance and consistent expectations.
  • Observe and share relevant notes with the supervising educator/teacher (progress, behaviour, needs).
  • Provide basic care and comfort (as appropriate) and support inclusive participation for all learners.
  • Follow school policies and health/safety procedures (incident reporting, hygiene, emergency procedures).
  • Participate in team meetings, training, and school events as required.

Requirements:

  • Completion of secondary school is required.
  • Early Childhood Education Assistant certificate or post-secondary coursework in early childhood education is an asset.
  • Experience in child care / working with young children is required.
  • Current CPR/First Aid or willingness to obtain.
  • Vulnerable Sector Check / Criminal Record Check satisfactory to the employer
  • Strong teamwork, reliability, and positive communication with children, families, and staff.
  • Knowledge of local culture/language is an asset.
