Job Summary:
The Promoter – Safe Communities is responsible for facilitating the delivery of health promotion programming to support injury prevention, emergency preparedness, and environmental health in First Nations individuals and communities supported by Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority.
The Promoter – Safe Communities is directly accountable to the Manager – Safe Communities.
This is a term position until March 31, 2026.
Qualifications:
•Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC Part II Special Employment).
•College diploma in a health-related field and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience as deemed acceptable by SLFNHA.
•A minimum of one years experience in a First Nations health setting.
•Excellent oral and written communication skills.
•Excellent presentation skills.
•Strong organizational and facilitation skills.
•Experience with Microsoft Office, graphic design software and other computer software
•Knowledge of the culture, history, geographical location, and health priorities of the First Nations people in the Sioux Lookout region.
•Valid Ontario G driver’s licence.
•The ability to speak in one of the Sioux Lookout area First Nations dialects, and/or write in syllabics are definite assets.
•The ability to perform the requirements of the position on a regular basis.
Roles and Responsibilities:
1. Work with communities to identify and monitor community priorities around Safe Communities
2. Collaborate with communities to recognize barriers to behavioral change, develop solutions, and establish supportive environments to promote behavior change, prevent injuries, address environmental concerns and foster individual and community emergency preparedness.
3. In collaboration with the other Safe Communities staff, develop, implement, monitor, and support the evaluation of a health promotion strategy for Safe Communities health
promotion.
4. Ensures that the program incorporates community feedback into future regional and community-based programs and initiatives.
5. Support and enable communities to develop and implement their health promotion strategy/approaches to promote safe communities.
6. Develop community capacity through training and mentorship of community-based to create safer communities.
7. Work with policy analysts and communities to develop and support healthy policies for environmental health, injury prevention, and emergency preparedness.
8. In collaboration with the Safe Communities team, provide education and health promotion on injury prevention, emergency preparedness, and environmental health to various community members and leaders through community visits, radio shows, local newsletters, school programs, community workshops, webinars, videoconferences, social media, etc.
9. Develop and share best practices for Safe Communities health promotion and education.
10. Provide expert advice, technical consultation, and continuing education to SLFNHA staff, key stakeholders, and communities relating to emergency preparedness, environmental health, and injury prevention health promotion.
11. Use health promotion expertise and experience to advocate for communities and the Sioux Lookout area to promote safe communities through emergency preparedness, environmental health, and injury prevention.
12. Represent SLFNHA and Approaches to Community Wellbeing on related working groups or committees, as needed.
13. Assist when required and any other duties assigned.
