POSITION: Special Constable – General
DURATION: 4 permanent full-time
PAY SCALE: $76,392.07 to $90,610.34

As a Special Constable, you may be assigned to one or more of the following functional areas:

General Duties and Enforcement

  • Enforce designated provincial statutes and municipal by-laws within the limits of your appointment (e.g., Liquor License and Control Act, Trespass to Property Act, Criminal Code).
  • Conduct lawful arrests and detentions where authorized.
  • Patrol assigned areas (e.g., city facilities, TBDSSAB housing properties or other institutions) on foot or by vehicle.
  • Respond to non-emergency calls for service and disturbances.
  • Prepare detailed occurrence and incident reports and provide written statements.

Court Services Functions

  • Provide security in courtrooms, courthouses, holding cells, and related areas.
  • Escort prisoners to and from court, detention facilities, and police custody.
  • Serve court documents and support court operations in coordination with judiciary staff.
  • Maintain courtroom decorum and intervene in disruptive situations when necessary.
  • Ensure the secure handling and transfer of evidence, exhibits, and legal documents.
  • Provide testimony in court proceedings as a witness.

Custodial and/or Jailer Duties

  • Supervise, book, and monitor persons in custody at the TBPS headquarters.
  • Ensure the safety, security, and welfare of detainees, including conducting wellness checks.
  • Complete custody records, risk assessments, and maintain secure logbooks.
  • Conduct searches of persons and cells according to lawful procedures.
  • Administer meals, property handling, and medication as directed and documented.
  • Respond to medical or behavioral incidents involving detainees in accordance with policy.

Administrative Duties

  • Takes reports from the public from walk-in traffic or over the telephone and enters the reports on the Records Management System or creates Calls for Service on the C.A.D.
  • Responds to routine internal and external inquiries and provides accurate information.
  • Responds to messages on Zone Watch from members of the public reporting non-emergency incidents.
  • Checks the Resource Centre ghost number each shift for any tasks assigned and conducts follow-ups.
  • Maintains the UTA books, ensures CPIC checks are conducted and institute charges when appropriate.
  • Verifies that requirements are met or appropriate documents are produced by the public regarding Traffic Caution Tickets and Towed Vehicle releases.
  • Assists Court officers with escorting prisoners from cell block to and from WASH Court and assists jailer with fingerprinting and the release from custody of non-violent prisoners.
  • Performs clerical support duties (e.g. maintains and mails files/reports, photocopies, prints computer reports, restocks/orders forms, etc.).
