Job Summary:
The Mental Health Worker provides trauma-informed emotional, mental health, and crisis support to
women and children accessing shelter services due to family violence, abuse, homelessness, or
crisis situations. The worker supports residents in building safety, stability, coping skills, and
connections to community resources while respecting confidentiality, cultural safety, and client
autonomy.
Preferable skills & Qualifications:
A successful candidate must possess the following:
• Diploma or degree in Social Work, Psychology, Mental Health, Indigenous Studies, Human Services,
or related field
• Experience working with women experiencing violence, trauma, addictions, or homelessness is
preferred.
• Knowledge of crisis intervention and mental health support practices.
• Understanding of domestic violence and its impacts on women and children.
• Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and the impacts of intergenerational trauma is
considered an asset.
• Demonstrated technical skills such as proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and
Power Point
• Strong communication and active listening skills.
• Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
• Conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.
• First Aid and CPR Certificate
• Clean Criminal Reference Check
• A Valid Class “G” Driver’s License
Summary of Duties & Responsibilities:
Crisis Intervention & Emotional Support
• Provide immediate emotional support and crisis intervention to residents.
• Conduct risk and safety assessments when required
• Support women experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, suicidal thoughts, addictions, or
emotional distress
• Assist residents in developing coping skills and emotional regulation strategies.
• Support clients during difficult transitions and high-stress situations.
Case Management & Advocacy
• Assist residents in setting goals related to mental wellness, housing, safety, parenting,
healing, and independence.
• Advocate for residents with outside agencies and service providers.
• Refer to counselling, addictions services, health care providers, legal supports, income
assistance, community programs.
• Accompany residents to appointments when appropriate.
Community Collaboration
• Build positive working relationships with community agencies and partners.
• Participate in case conferences and coordinated care planning when appropriate.
• Maintain awareness of local mental health and social services resources.
Working Conditions:
• Shift work may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Fast-paced and emotionally demanding environment.
• Exposure to crisis situations and traumatic disclosures.
• Ability to respond to emergencies and support residents in distress.
