KITCHEN COORDINATOR JOB DESCRIPTION

As the Kitchen Coordinator, you will lead culinary operations in our Community Kitchen, ensuring the smooth day-to-day management of meal planning, food procurement, waste management, and kitchen safety. You will oversee a team of staff and volunteers while maintaining high standards for food safety, nutrition, and hygiene. In addition, you will align with our organization’s values and the Occupational Health and Safety Act in every aspect of your work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Culinary Leadership: Lead meal planning, food preparation, and cooking operations, ensuring nutritious and balanced meals are provided to our clients.
  • Staff & Volunteer Coordination: Supervise, train, and motivate kitchen staff and volunteers, fostering a positive and respectful working environment.
  • Food Procurement: Oversee the purchasing and inventory of food and supplies, ensuring cost-effective and sustainable sourcing.
  • Safety & Cleanliness: Ensure compliance with food safety regulations, maintain cleanliness in the kitchen, and implement safe food handling practices.
  • Waste Management: Manage food waste and implement strategies for reducing waste while promoting sustainability.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other Shelter House departments to ensure client needs are met and operations run smoothly.
  • Client-Centered Care: Demonstrate understanding of the complex nature of the population we serve, ensuring a compassionate approach in all aspects of food services.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in Culinary Arts, Nutrition, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience in a culinary setting.
  • Knowledge of nutrition and experience with meal planning and cooking for large groups.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing or coordinating teams of staff and volunteers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals.
  • A commitment to Shelter House’s mission of client-centered care, harm reduction, and low-barrier access to services.
  • Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety standards and food safety regulations.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.
