The Organization
The Student Union of Confederation College Inc. (SUCCI) is the student government body that represents and serves Confederation College Students in Thunder Bay, Ontario. As a student-focused organization, it is committed to advocacy, entertainment, well-being, employment, education, and student-friendly services to enhance the overall college experience.

SUCCI provides a wide variety of student services and is comprised of a dedicated dynamic, collaborative team of student leaders and staff, which is committed to meeting the needs and expectations of students attending Confederation College while enhancing the overall student experience.

The Position
The SUCCI Executive Director is the Chief Executive Administrator and acts as the key advisor and resource person to the Executive & Board of Directors of SUCCI. The Executive Director provides effective business and advocacy advice and oversees the administrative and operational functions of the organization. The Executive Director provides guidance and direction to full-time & contract administrative staff to ensure the successful achievement of SUCCI’s organizational plans, goals, services, activities, and strategies.

The Executive Director establishes strong positive relationships on behalf of the organization, by working closely with stakeholder groups, including external partners, senior college management, student service managers, administration, and faculty. As an advocate for the best interests of SUCCI and the student body, the Executive Director ensures the delivery of services to support student success. The Executive Director regularly liaises with Confederation College to support effective communication and is a member of college committees responsible for the services and activities delivered by the college.

The Executive Director will take a strategic and proactive approach to lead the organization forward. As a highly collaborative, energizing, effective, and trusted relationship builder, this visionary leader will be responsible for ensuring the consistent achievement of the SUCCI mission and organizational objectives. The Executive Director will be an effective mentor, change agent, and advocate for students.

In developing a yearly vision and strategic plan, the Executive Director will work with the Board of Directors to help guide the organization and advance the student experience. In addition, the Executive Director will be responsible for operationalizing the vision and strategic plan while leading a high-performing and committed team to take SUCCI to the next level. As a mentor, you will ensure that the student’s voices are heard while endeavoring to bring out the best qualities of your team members, allowing their continual development and strengths to shine.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will:

  • Provide leadership in developing the program, organizational, and financial plans/budgets with the Executive team, Board of Directors, and staff.
  • In conjunction with the SUCCI President, the Executive Director will advocate and promote student involvement and development within the college community.
  • Liaise and collaboratively work with the senior leaders, staff, and students of Confederation College.
  • Leverage and embrace the multicultural strength and diversity of the student body.
  • Identify and evaluate the risks to the organization’s people (clients, staff, management, and volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image, and implement measures to control risks.
  • Provide oversight to ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local regulators.
  • Utilize a well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, analytical and intuitive skills.

Minimum level of education:

  • 4 Year Degree or equivalent, Business Degree preferable
  • Human resource, and financial management experience an asset
  • Managerial experience an asset

Experience:

  • Demonstrated background in student life/student development would be an asset.
    3 to 5 years of hands-on supervision of staff and financial management of business, department, or entity.
  • A strong preference for someone with experience, knowledge, or exposure to a not-for-profit governance model or student association/union.
  • Experience working with a volunteer or paid board and within a team environment where there is a continual change in elected board members annually is an asset.
  • Strong track record of fiscal management and responsibility, creating and managing budgets, business finance, capital funding, contracts, and partnerships.
  • Advanced understanding and skills in using financial information systems and other computer applications, including MS Office Suite and online meeting platforms.
  • Effective leadership skills, with a focus on mentoring and motivating an employee base of professionals and/or students.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Advocacy and promotion of student involvement.
  • Ability to liaise and work collaboratively with senior leaders, staff, and other departments to build relationships and build upon programs provided to students.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with internal and external partners and in a multigenerational diverse, and changing environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (both written and verbal), and presentation skills.
  • Promote diversity.
  • Sound judgment and risk management skills.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • Patience, understanding, and empathy are critical.

This is a full-time salary position with occasional evening and weekend work*. An excellent extended health plan and CAAT Pension Plan will be provided upon completing one year of service by the successful incumbent.
