WHO WE ARE: Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Dibenjikewin Onaakonikewin (“KIDO”) is the KI Family Law and its Maamao Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin (“MDK”) service model carries out child and family services, but KIDO is much broader than mainstream services. It is specific to KI Nation and is an important exercise of Miinikozowin (inherent power) by KI and aims to restore kayaash egwa miina ahchaako kikinohamaakewinan (traditional and spiritual teachings of KI).
VISION STATEMENT: To reach a goal of a healthy self, healthy dibenjikewin (family), and a healthy community. Our ancestors held everything sacred and thanked Kishe-Manido (Creator) for all that had been given, including the foundation to guide a strong community composed of healthy dibenjikewinan (families) who are raising awaashishag (children) and/or oshkaadizag (youth) grounded in their culture and language.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Translator/Multimedia Producer for Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Dibenjikewin Onaakonikewin (KIDO) will provide Anishininiimowin-English oral translation for KIDO meetings, events, and multimedia productions. The Translator/Multimedia Producer will coordinate and create content for KIDO broadcasts on Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) Community Radio (and for future KIDO podcasts). Duties will also include conducting interviews for radio/multimedia content and translating interviews by other KIDO Ayamowin (Communications) staff.
The Translator/Multimedia Producer will have advanced fluency and vocabulary in Anishininiimowin. She/he will play a key role in helping KIDO to fulfill its mission to “revitalize our values, principles, customs, language, and kayaash egwa miina ahchaako kikinohamaakewinan, so that we can support our dibenjikewinan to raise our awaashishag and oshkaadizag in healthy homes within our community.”
Reporting to the Ayamowin Manager, the Translator/Multimedia Producer works in close cooperation with other Ayamowin staff, such as the Multimedia Producer, Community Engagement Coordinator, Translator (Written), and Marketing Coordinator, and across KIDO departments, including Human Resources and Training. This is a full-time position. Duties will generally take place during regular KIDO operating hours, but the Translator/Multimedia Producer will sometimes have to work flexible hours to fulfill requirements of the job.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide Anishininiimowin-English oral translation for KIDO internal, community and external meetings; public presentations; and special events.
- Provide Anishininiimowin-English translation for interviews conducted by the KIDO Ayamowin (Communications) Multimedia Producer and other Ayamowin staff.
- Conduct interviews in Anishininiimowin and English, audio or video record, and edit those interviews for use in KIDO Ayamowin multimedia productions (training will be provided if necessary). Interview subjects will include KIDO managers and staff, and KI Elders, community leaders, church/spiritual leaders, knowledge keepers, and natural helpers.
- Collaborate with and assist other Ayamowin staff with multimedia production duties as required, including generating and sharing story ideas; transcription/translation of interviews; editing Anishininiimowin content; and basic photography/videography (training will be provided if necessary).
- Lead weekly KIDO programming for broadcast on KI Community Radio (and a KIDO podcast, once launched), including scheduling, content planning and creation, pre-recorded and/or live interviews, audio editing, and archiving (training will be provided if necessary). Content will focus on promotion of the KIDO vision, mission, principles, and services.
- Liaise with KI and regional programs and services to inform KI people about resources for healthy living. Organize and regularly update this information for sharing through KIDO Communications channels.
- Support the KIDO community and school engagement activities of the Ayamowin Community Engagement Coordinator.
- Collaborate with and assist the Ayamowin Marketing Coordinator in the development of Anishininiimowin content for marketing purposes.
- Collaborate with and assist other KIDO departments, such as Human Resources and Training, in the development of Anishininiimowin materials for employee recruitment and training.
- Working closely with the Ayamowin Translator (Written), contribute to the development of goals, strategies, and plans for KI Anishininiimowin retention and revitalization. Lead related KIDO activities. Liaise and collaborate with other KI programs focused on Anishininiimowin retention & revitalization.
- Research, itemize and catalogue Anishininiimowin terms related to the delivery of KIDO services.
- Monitor social media for story ideas and for commentary about KIDO that may require a response.
- Travel as required, primarily between KIDO locations in KI, Sioux Lookout, and Thunder Bay.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced fluency and vocabulary in the Anishininiimowin language, with a passion for its revitalization and retention.
- Excellent communication skills in both Anishininiimowin and English. Ability to write Anishininiimowin in Roman orthography and/or syllabics preferred. Comfortable and confident with public speaking.
- Experience as an Anishininiimowin-English oral translator. Specialized education and/or training for this work would be an asset.
- Related experience and training in public relations, marketing, community radio broadcasting, and/or multimedia production would also be an asset.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug’s distinct history, culture, traditions, and values, and of contemporary life in the community. Commitment to the KIDO vision, mission, and principles.
- Excellent interpersonal skills for building and maintaining relationships with KI members and other KIDO stakeholders, for interviewing, and for working collaboratively with other Ayamowin staff and as part of cross-functional KIDO teams.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer programs.
- Audio editing, social media, and photography/videography skills would be assets.
- A valid Ontario driver’s licence would be an asset.
- A Criminal Record Check, with a Vulnerable Sector Check, is required.
