Support Worker

Job Overview

Seeking a responsible and patient Support Worker to provide support with activities of daily living for a forty-seven year old man living in his own home. This man has a developmental disability and Prader Willi Syndrome (a genetic disorder). He receives 24 hour support from his staff. As a member of his team your role would be to support him to participate in activities within the community, helping him to maintain his home and care for his dog, and to provide assistance with activities of daily living. He has difficulty adapting to change and benefits from as much consistency as possible in his day to day life.

Duties

• Preparing healthy meals which are low calorie and nutritious.
• Helping him to maintain his home, including light housekeeping and yard duties.
• Supporting the individual in remaining physically active by providing a variety of physical activities (this client enjoys walking quite a bit, especially with his dog).
• Taking the individual into the community to participate in activities.
• Building upon and learning new skills.
• Administering medication as prescribed on schedule and ensuring proper documentation of medication administration.
• Assisting with activities of daily living (maintaining proper hygiene, bathing).
• Providing support through challenging behaviours by providing guidance and redirection.
• Keeping other staff and client’s sister apprised of important information in a timely manner.
• Providing companionship and support to engage in social activities which promote mental and physical stimulation.

Experience

• Previous experience as a support worker in various settings including group homes, health care facilities, or home care settings is an asset.
• Experience in caregiving roles that require the individual to exercise flexibility and patience and the ability to work well independently.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, and healthcare teams.
• A compassionate nature with a genuine desire to help others is essential for success in this role.
• Will need to provide an updated criminal records check.
• Be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
